Facebook Messenger Available for Your Computer

Facebook released a desktop version of their Messenger, available both on Windows and Mac. The applications were announced a year ago during the F8 conference, but it seems the recent pandemic pushed the launch, as Facebook noticed a spike in desktop use:

Over the past month, we saw more than a 100% increase in people using their desktop browser for audio and video calling on Messenger.

Downloading a stand-alone application will allow users to have group chats on a larger screen, but it seems this will stay primarily for personal use. There’s no fear the application will replace Zoom, because Facebook limits the group to 8 members. And those members do have to be your friends to join the call, you do not have the option of sending a link to a business contact for a quick video meeting. Also, screen-sharing is currently not an option, which is another feature most business users need.

One of the benefits of using Facebook Messenger outside your browser is the ability to stay connected without being overwhelmed with the rest of Facebook. You can now get notified just for chats and messages sent to you and stay blissfully unaware of the newest memes your friends are sharing or drama in your neighborhood group.

Dark Mode Available

Facebook has been releasing the updated version of their newsfeed and the new look includes the dark mode. If you don’t have it, and want to try it out, here’s how to opt-in.

Dark mode is also optional on the stand-alone Messenger app. If you haven’t yet, you can download it here: Windows – Mac.
